The online companion site to the textbook Introduction to Multimedia Computing by G. Friedland and R. Jain, to appear at Cambridge University PressJuly 2014.
Even though the mathematical foundations are very similar, in the past, multimedia research seemed to be strictly divided according to the different types of data that were to be analyzed. Therefore many research groups work on either speech processing, natural language processing or computer vision. However, the processing power of modern computers is starting to allow us to think about approaches that analyze data multimodaly, i.e. processing different media synergistically. Combined processing promises improved robustness in many situations and is closer to what humans do.
This site is still under construction. While this is true for a Wiki in general, we want to point out that the critical mass for a productive and interesting site has not yet been reached. We are working on it.
